Close-up of the inflorescence of hairy-stemmed checker mallo as seen near the northern Oregon coast........June 2009. The inflorescence generally consists of a densely flowered, branched spike that generally is less than 8 cm long. The calyx is 9-15 mm long with stellate, hirsute and ciliate hairs. The petals are pink or pinkish-lavender and are longer than 15 mm.

The inflorescence of bristlystem checkerbloom is an elongated, open spike. The calyx is subglabrous to fairly pubescent wtih tiny star-shaped hairs, 4-6 mm long and often purplish-tinged. The rose-colored petals are 5-15 mm in length.
