Habitat:

Moist, open areas, forest edges, streamsides.


Characteristics:

1. Large shrub to small trees. (to 30 ft.).

2. Thorns to 1 inch long.

3. Leaves alternate on stem, are oval & and edges are both 3-7 lobed with saw- toothed edges.

4. Flowers white, 5 petals, in clusters. Fruit are small, berry-sized purple apples.


Uses or Importances:

1. Fruits eaten fresh or dried.

2. Ornamental tree for yards.

3. Bark once used to treat VD, strengthen heart, reduce swelling.

4. Thorns used as fish hooks, to pierce ears. Wood for tool handles.
