Characteristics:

1. Oregon state flower. Yellow flowers in dense bunches.

2. Shiny holly-like leaves with 5-11 prickly pinnate leaflets.

3. May grow to six feet. Purple berries in summer.


Uses:

1. Edible berries raw or cooked. May be used in jams, juice, flavorings or dried.

2. Yellow dye is made from dried roots.

3. Dried bark or roots used as herbal medication for stomach aches, coughs, and as a laxative.

4. Common northwest garden ornamental.
