Mourning Cloak

Mourning Cloak: Nymphalis antiopa antiopa

Mourning cloak sunning along the Klickitat Trail about w miles north of the Fisher Road crossing..................February 20, 2010.

The photo above shows a tattered mourning cloak as seen at Catherine Creek in the Columbia River Gorge................April 9, 2006. All photos on this page were taken at the same time and place.

The photo above shows a mourning cloak trying to blend in with a piece of lichen-encrusted basalt beneath it. When it saw me approaching, it leaned to one side, drying to press its body to the rock, evidently trying to make itself less visible.
