Common juniper seen atop of Red Mountain (next to the base of the lookout tower), Indian Heaven Wilderness.........Oct. 31, 2017. In Washington, this would be considered var. montana due to the broad, glaucous stomatal band in each leaf.
Common juniper with ripening fruits as seen at a bald along the Pacific Crest Trail #2000 about 2 miles uphill to the northeast of Forest Road #68, Gifford Pinchot National Forest.........September 4, 2016. This is variety jackii because the stomatal band on each needle-like leaf is 3-4 times as broad as the adjacent, lateral green margins.
