This species looks similar to the balsamroots but is much more glabrous with a varnished appearance, and there typically are more flower heads on each scape. The photo at right shows the bracts and upper stem leaves of northern mule's-ears as seen in upland grasslands along Lakeside Road in Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge.........June 3, 2007. Note that the involucral bracts are glabrous rather than hairy.
