The terminal male spike and lateral female spikes of elk sedge as seen in dry coniferous forest near the Klickitat Canyon NRCA on the east side of Mt. Adams........August 11,2008. This species typically has 1-3 perigynia per inflorescence.

The terminal male spike of elk sedge blooming in oak woodlands at the South Breaks, Klickitat Wildlife Area.....April 10, 2025. The bract covering the lateral perigynia can be found at the lowermost left of the spike.
