The photo above shows emergent bur-reed as seen in a drying pond at the fishing area along Lakeside Road at the east end of Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge.........July 31, 2008. The three lower flowering heads are female while the smaller whitish ones higher on the stem are male. Note also the base of the stem leaves which are Y-shaped in cross-section.
Broad-fruited bur-reed is also found at this site but it is 3-5 times taller than emergent bur-reed.
