Large-leaved Lupine, Many-leaved Lupine
Lupinus burkei
Synonym: Lupinus burkei ssp. burkei
The photo above shows large-leaved lupine
as seen in moister soils on the north side of the DNR rock quarry at about 4100'
abreast a ridge dividing the Dairy Creek and Cougar Creek drainages at the southeastern
corner of Mt. Adams........June 11, 2005. The stems occasionally
will have side branches that end in racemes.
The photo above shows the inflorescence of large-leaved lupine
at the DNR rock quarry at about 4100' abreast a ridge dividing the Dairy Creek
and Cougar Creek drainages at the southeastern corner of Mt. Adams.........June

The photo above shows the flower of large-leaved lupine as seen
in moister soils surrounding the DNR rock quarry at about 4100' abreast a ridge
dividing the Dairy Creek and Cougar Creek drainages at the southeastern corner
of Mt. Adams.........June 11, 2005. Note the wide banner index (the
banner is reflexed sharply upwards at a point about halfway along length of
the wings).
The photo above affords a view of the keel of large-leaved lupine.
Note the broad lateral surface of the keel and the hairs along its upper margin,
as well as the keel tip which abruptly curves upwards and narrows rapdily to
a point. The keel has accidently been ripped in the process of exposing it.
Photographed at 4050' atop the ridge dividing the Dairy and Cougar Creek drainages
on the eastern slopes of Mt. Adams.........June 17, 2006.
The photo above shows an unopened flower of large-leaved lupine
as seen in moister soils on the north side of the DNR rock quarry at about 4100'
abreast a ridge dividing the Dairy Creek and Cougar Creek drainages at the southeastern
corner of Mt. Adams..........June 11, 2005. Note that the dorsal surface
of the banner is largely glabrous, or free of any hairs.
The photo above shows the large leaves of large-leaved lupine.
The leaves of broadleaf lupine may appear at first to be very similar, but this
species has leaflets that are generally less than 8 cm long while those of large-leaved
lupine are typically much longer.
