Subspecies nortoniae differs from subspecies scouleri
in having one to several simple stems (rather than multiple, often branched stems)
less than 20 cm high and is generally found higher than ssp. scouleri in subalpine
habitats.

Scouler's st. john's wort observed at Big Springs on the northeastern shoreline of Clear Lake, Willamette National Forest.....August 2, 2023. Note the lack of black dots on the flower petals and leaves which help distinguish this from the non-native klamathweed (Hypericum perforatum).
