Base of flower somewhat vase-like, with 5 large petals reflexed to the side at a 90 degree angle. Leaves linear, opposite, and to 20 mm long. Leaves with tufts of "wool" at the bases and with pointed but not spiny tips. Wildflowers of open slopes, often found on ridgetops.
