Abert Rim is an impressive 30 mile fault block ridge oriented from north to south with the steep side facing west and rising about 25--' from the valley floor (and Abert Lake) below. The upper 820' section of slope is a nearly vertical cap of basalt. The northern section is generally arid while the southern half (south of Valley Falls, OR) is covered with western junipers, mountain mahogany and ponderosa pines.
See the links below if you wish to access Abert Rim via the steep Juniper Creek route from US395.
I hope to travel Fremont-Winema National Forest Roads to explore access from that side of Abert Rim, hopefully during the summer of 2020.
