Logan Valley
Trip Leaders: Jerry & Mike Igo
An auto tour with numerous short hikes. Logan Valley is a complex of open, wet, moist and dry meadows with interspersed aspen groves at 4800' to the south of the Strawberry Mts. We hope to see over 80 flower species including a great sea of pink elephant head (toward the end of the bloom, though), Polygonum bistortoides, bog saxifrage, riparian willow complexes, nesting greater sandhill cranes, willets, curlews and upland sandpiper. Pronghorn antelope, mule deer, and elk and possibly sighted within same day. Paved road to Logan Valley, about 50 minutes from John Day. Because there are many options to add to this auto tour, we have the option to go where the flowers are best or most varied. These could include side trips up towards the south trailhead to Strawberry Mt. (depending on snow), forest & riparian plants along the Malheur River, as well as lots of places to stop and look in wet meadows and open forests!
