Dunstan Homestead Preserve

The Nature Conservancy

Leader: Jeff Fields

Dunstan Homestead Preserve is centered around nearly 5 stream miles of the Middle Fork John Day River and its tributaries at an elevation of 3500 feet in northern Grant County. This field trip will emphasize changes to riparian plant communities and stream channels that have taken place since the Preserve was created in 1990. Management tools we will discuss include control of non-native species, prescribed fire, exclusion of domestic livestock, and channel openings. The Preserve is 60 road miles (paved) from John Day, with ample parking at the Preserve office, between milemarkers 16 and 17 on Grant County Road 20. Tour will include easy walks through the floodplain portion of the preserve. Rubber boots or "soak-able" shoes are recommended.
