Aldrich Mountain & the Cedar Grove

View west towards Aldrich Mt. from the summit of Fields Peak...........May 24, 2003.

Leader: Paul Slichter

A driving tour (about 80 miles rt on paved & good gravel roads) with several short hikes. Aldrich Mt. (6991') affords good 360¾ views of the Ochocos, Aldrich Mts, Strawberry Mts, and points around. Possible views of bighorn sheep. The Cedar Grove, a 1 mile walk to a relict stand of Chamaecyparis nootkatensis(the nearest populations are 130 miles away) as well as Mt. Lady Slipper, Lupinus polyphyllus and others. At the Cabbage Patch see Phacelia minutissima, sensitive with a short 1 mile but steep hike downhill and thus uphill exit. Nice, if short hike! Regular cars OK. Enroute we may see Luina serpentina & Mimulus cusickii, and we may have the flexibiltiy to visit other floral sites depending on time & bloom.
