Wildflower Bloom Reports for Central Oregon

Wildflower Bloom in Central Oregon: June 27, 2004

Forest Road #31: Summit Drive

Umatilla NF & Wallowa-Whitman NF Boundary (NW of LaGrande, OR)

Forest Road #31 may be accessed from Interstate 84 by exiting the the freeway west of LaGrande, OR at the Summit Drive/ Mt. Emily exit. Proceed north on Rd #31 about 1/3 mile to a nice, wet meadow on the right or east side of the road. Proceed north, stopping to explore new flowers seen along the road. The flower display is especially nice from late June to early July between Drumhill Ridge and Grandview Rd (unimproved road #3120 running south to Mt. Emily). Continue north along FS Rd #31 making stops along the ridgetop with great flowers and wonderful views east towards the Wallowa Mts. Explore down the steep eastern slopes for areas where snow lies later into the summer to search for early spring blossoms.

The drive along the ridgetop may be completed by descending east on the following roads:

a. FS Rd 32 which descends along Dry Creek towards Summerville, OR.

b. FS Rd 3728 which parallels Phillips Creek before intersecting OR Highway 204 several miles west of Elgin, OR.

c. OR Highway 204 which runs from Elgin, OR west towards Tollgate, OR (another nice area to explore for wildflowers).
