The photo above shows a close-up view of the attractively marked flower of large-flowered tonella as seen on the road to Granny View and Hat Rock, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area..........................June 26, 2007.

Characteristics:

Large-flowered tonella is much branched annual wildflower with stems from 10-35 cm high. The stems are glabrous below and covered with gland-tipped hairs above. The leaves are short-petiolate to sessile on the stems. The lower leaves are trifoliate with lance-elliptic or narrower segments, each about .5-4 cm long. The leaves within the inflorescence are reduced in size and often entire margined.

The numerous flowers are showy and 6-12 mm wide. The corolla is blue or lavender and whitewith short tube and 5 spreading, somewhat two-lipped lobes. The 4 stamens are exserted from the throat of the flower.


Habitat:

Large-flowered tonella may be found in rocky, open places.


Range:

Large-flowered tonella may be found in the Snake River Canyon and its tributaries in southeastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, and Idaho.
