Eastern Fox Squirrel: Sciurus niger

Mammals-Rodents- Squirrel Family.


Characteristics:

1. A tree squirrel, that nests in trees, but is also comfortable on the ground.

2. Large bushy tail.

3. Gray fur on back & sides. Belly is rusty-yellow.

4. Long incisor teeth to gnaw seeds. 5. Buries seeds for winter use.


Habitat:

Deciduous forest, parks, & suburbs. Imported from eastern USA.


Importance:

1. Now a common species found in parks and neighborhoods of western towns and cities.

2. It successfully outcompetes native western gray squirrels and Douglas' squirrels, often forcing them from these urban habitats
