Chalcedon or Snowberry Checkerspot
Euphydryas chalcedona
The checkerspots on this page were photographed at the boundary
of a big sage/bitterbrush community merging with a Juniper/Mt. Mahogoney community.
They were braving icy 30 mph winds to nectar on the numerous ground hugging Erigeron
chrysopsidis scattered throughout the area. The photos were taken near Picture
Rock Pass, several miles northeast of Summer Lake, OR on May 25, 1996.
